On July 1st,1998 the City of New York Fire Department re-organized 6 Squad companies throughout the City, using existing Engine companies. These units, along with Squad 1 in Brooklyn, have many duties including responding to all Signal 10-75's(working Fires) in selected battalions, as well as Haz-mat, Rope Rescues, Confined Space, Trench Rescue, Collapse, Auto Extrication, and other vital situations. They can be special called to any type of emergency or fire.

The duties of the Squads are much more complicated than their predecessors. They are used as engine companies in their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd due areas and as a Squad anywhere outside that in their selected Battalions. If operating as a Squad, they can be used to do anything the Chief in charge needs from operating a handline to searching for life and fire. The members of Squads receive special training in all types of emergencies and firefighter removal techniques.
