At around 1515hrs on Wednesday August 30th,2006 Squad 270 received a run for a phone alarm reporting smoke from the house adjacent to the callers at 116 st between 91 Ave and Atlantic Ave.  Within 2 minutes Squad 270 pulled up to a 2 1/2 story private dwelling with heavy smoke pushing from the front and fire out the windows on the right side of the house burning the house next door.  Squad 270 transmitted a 2nd alarm and went to work.  Due to a faulty hydrant 270 chauffeur asked the 2nd due engine to supply them from another hydrant.  Which turned out to be a bad hydrant as well. So the 3rd due engine finally had a good working hydrant which supplied 270's rig.   Sq-270 knocked down all the fire on the 1st floor and then they where relieved.  Fire was under control after an hour or so. No one was injured.

FIRE IN THE COCKLOFT
Wednesday, August 23, 2006
-
On Wednesday August 23, 2006 Squad 270 was on a brush fire call behind their quarters in the Long Island Railroad yard.  Just as we were in the process of taking up, a 1st due box went out over the air for a house fire around the block on 124st between 89Ave and Jamaica Ave.  E-308 got in 1st, due to our delay reporting a 10-75 for a fire on the 2nd floor of a 2sty private dwelling. Sq-270 pulled up and there was 2 lines stretched and 3 engines on scene so the 51 Battalion had Squad split up and check the basement to see if the fire started there and go to the top floor of the fire building and exposure to open up the ceilings cause the fire was in the cock loft with extension to the exposure.

Wednesday, December 14, 2005
-
On December 14,2005 at 0535hrs Squad 270 received a run for a ERS pull box alarm for box 9683 for the address of Jamaica Ave and Lefferts Blvd.  As they were pulling out of quarters the dispatcher notified them that they were now receiving several phone calls for 119-20 Jamaica Ave reporting a fire in store and they were filling out the assignment to 4 Engines and 2 Trucks with the Rescue.  Within a minute Sq270 arrives to find a heavy smoke condition coming from the 1st Floor of a 3sty Multiply dwelling with a church on the 1st Flr and apartments above.  The 1st floor was all sealed up and locked down so L-143 had to force entry while 270 stretched and then operated a 2 1/2 inch hose line into the church to knock down the fire.  The 13 Division chief transmitted a 3rd alarm for a fire in the church which extended up a shaft to the upper floors and into the cockloft where it was burning for some time.  All companies that operated did a nice job for a fire that was well advanced on arrival and had extension throughout the entire building was eventually put out with several handlines and numerous companies which all had a piece of the fire.

2ND ALARM FATAL FIRE
Sunday, December 4, 2005
-
On December 4, 2005 Squad 270 was just about finishing up a typical winter night tour with 1 2nd alarm fire and 1 All-hands fire when at 0700hrs they received a ticket to respond to box 2688 @ the address of 134-54 Bedell St. between 176st and 137 Ave for a couple of calls reporting a fire at the address.Within a few seconds Engine 317 transmitted a 10-75 for a fire in the basement of a 2 1/2 story private dwelling.  When Squad 270 arrived the Battalion 54 had just received a report from Ladder 165 that the 2st floor had collapse into the basement and they are unable to reach the basement stairs.  At this time fire was very heavy and had extended to the 2nd floor and attic and members up there were chased out by fire, so the 54chief ordered the members out of the upper floors and the first line was forced to stay towards the front half of the house due to the collapse.  Unable to make any real progress the companies were ordered out of the house and 2 towerladders were set up to assist in the operation.  After some time of operating the master streams from the 2 towerladders the majority of the fire was knocked down and a few members with a chief were sent in to knock down any hot spots and to search for 2 reported missing civilians.  After an extensive search the 2 victims were found in the basement of the house and removed. Unfortunately the fire was very involved on arrival and had started in the basement and the victims didn't have a chance for survival and they perished in the blaze.

VICTIM PINNED UNDER CAR
Tuesday, November 1, 2005
-
On November 1, 2005 at 2243 hrs Squad 270 received a run for a confirmed person pinned under a vehicle.  Within minutes the squad arrives to find a vehicle that had flipped over in a slopped driveway and landed in between a parked car and a retaining wall with a victim caught under the car and the car is on its side.  With the help of the surrounding ladder companies the squad stabilize the car from rolling over by hooking up a grip hoist to the vehicle.  Once that was setup the car was then attacked from both sides, on the bottom side airbags were set up to lift the vehicle and at the same time the top side had a Hurst spreader in position to lift that side. While the 2 sides where lifted slowly together the victim was slowly released and was able to be slide out from under the vehicle.
